The Commission is today holding a media handling and etiquette training workshop for Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Commissioners and senior managers. The workshop aims to improve media relations and visibility of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC), and enhance internal and external communication.

The centrality of media in election process cannot be gainsaid as it shapes the discourse that the audience engages in, informs the public, sets the agenda and frames how the audience receives the electoral message. Importantly, the media can build and consolidate the gains made in the electoral process to have a stable nation.

“We need to understand the media platform, the various tools used, ethics, rules and regulations so that as a Commission we know how best to work and engage with the media. Elections are central to the stability of security in the nation, and it directly affects the fabrics that tie together our social economics as a country,” said IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon
The Chairperson observed that what the Commission says should build and not destroy the country. “Let us get this right as IEBC by granting the media access to credible information that is verifiable to fight misinformation and fake news,” said Ethekon.

Kenya Editors’ Guild President, Zubeida Kananu, congratulated the Commission on their appointment and the approach they took from day one to engage the media. “This confirms that if IEBC gets it right with the media, then their communication will be right and the public will receive the right information on the electoral process and activities the Commission is engaging in,” she said.
Kananu said that access to credible information is foundation for media to inform and educate the public at it will help the Commission to build trust.
